Houses contaminated through the cooking or smoking of methamphetamine is a growing issue in New Zealand. It pays to make sure that you’re not buying into it. P or meth testing is now an essential part of buying, selling or renting any Northland home or property.
Drug Testing Houses
New Zealand’s most dangerous drug is often an invisible one and residue from the cooking process presents a serious health risk.
75% of meth labs in NZ are based out of rental homes. Nearly a quarter of homes built for a new state housing development in Christchurch were already contaminated with P less than a year later. A recent Tenancy Tribunal decision ordered a Tuakau landlord to pay more than $7500 to his former tenants for unknowingly renting them a meth-contaminated house.
Ex-meth labs often have to go through extensive clean ups before they are fit for living in again. Got a meth lab in your rental? It only takes one incident of P manufacturing and you’ve potentially lost 15 or 20 years of investment.
P labs are not the only problem. After only a few months of smoking meth, or P, the chemical particles that cause breathing problems, headaches and nausea attach to dust and leach into walls and carpets. Replacing carpets and curtains would cost an estimated $10,000 for an average sized rental property.
P Contamination Testing
Avoid these high costs and health risks by not putting yourself in such a situation in the first place. Meth testing can detect the residue from a cook or from the smoking of P.
